My proudest achievement thus far

It's close to end of the year and as usual I'm doing some reflecting. The older I get the more pressure I feel to be at a certain point in my life and I realize I'm no where near that point. I was thinking, have I accomplished anything worthwhile, anything I can be proud of? Have I accomplished anything worth sharing with my nieces, my future children and grandchildren? My proudest achievement so far is speaking at Mamie Till Mobley's funeral. For those who don't know Mamie Till was the mother of Emmett Till a young man brutally murdered in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. Ms. Mobley was my Sunday School teacher and a woman whose courage I always and continue to admire. When she passed I was asked to say some words at her funeral. Initially I was intimidated. How could I speak on such an historical figure and in front of the hundreds of people that attended her service? What could I say in the presence of countless media outlets, prominent politicians and civil rights leaders and other greats? I couldn't find the words and I was sick to my stomach with grief and fear. I began to write and when I finished this is what I had and this is what I read in front of all those people.

Five Feet One
A Woman who stood maybe five feet one,
Slew many giants in memory of her son.
A son brutally murdered because of his color,
She did what no other would because she was his mother.
She took on a system corrupt from within...
Armed with faith and favor, destined to win.
Determined to see that justice was done,
A giant among many and yet, only, maybe, five feet one.
A woman of grace, integrity and great strength,
Working diligently until her body was spent.
A great task God assigned her the day that she was born,
He knew in her lifetime her son’s death she would mourn.
Yet, he fashioned and molded her to be a woman of unparalleled power,
He alone knew her appointed time, the day, the moment and the hour.
Her desire to make this world better for you and for me;
Fueled her crusade against injustice and inequality.
She won the battle in preserving the memory of her son.
Her work on earth is complete, finished and done.
She fought the good fight her prize she obtained.
Her stand against injustice intact it remains.
A woman who stood maybe five feet one.
Finally reunited with her beloved, only son.
